How the readiness checker works

The checker starts by asking whether you were married or in a de facto relationship and whether you have separated, then works through two lists. The disclosure list asks which financial documents you already have, such as property valuations, superannuation statements, bank statements, business records, tax returns and records of debts. The complexity list asks about factors that can make a settlement harder, such as business interests, trusts, international assets, family violence, children under 18, pets or an existing binding financial agreement.

The tool scores how many disclosure documents you have, rates complexity from low to very high based on how many factors you ticked, lists the documents still missing and why each matters, notes the issues your complexity factors may raise and suggests next steps.

What the checker cannot tell you

It measures preparation, not outcome. It does not value your assets, predict how a property pool would be divided or check whether your documents are complete and current.

When to get advice

Get advice early if your complexity rating is high or very high, if you are missing key documents the other party controls, or if safety is a concern. If you are experiencing family violence, the tool points you to support services first.
